Roping Terms & What they Mean

Spoke:
The amount of rope in your loop from the honda to your grip on the rope.
Slack:
The loose part of the rope. You have to pull the slack to pull the rope tight.
Dally:
Securing the rope to your saddlehorn, in Team Roping when riding a horse. If you’re not on a horse, still practice pulling your slack and pulling your hands up!
Tip:
Part of the loop, the point of the rope, furthest away from your hand.
Heading:
One player catching the calf dummy around the horns or the neck. Kyle’s Tip: Aim at the left horn when you rope the head.
Heeling:
The second player catching the calf dummy around the rear ankles. Kyle’s Tip: Aim at the left hock (ankle).
Honda:
The bit of rope that loops & knots to allow for a loop in your rope. Learn how to tie a honda from Tom. See Marty show how to put on a plastic speedburner.
Lay:
How stiff or soft your rope is. Heelers want a stiffer rope that will hold open longer (to get under the hooves). Heading ropes are softer.

How we Dummy Rope at Smith & Edwards – & you can in your backyard!

You need 3 people: a header, a heeler, and someone to push the dummy.

The header checks in with his heeler, and nods to the person pushing the dummy when he’s ready.

The header runs after the dummy and catches the horns or neck. Then, the header pulls the dummy straight, to the left, giving the heeler a good opportunity to get the rope under and around the dummy’s back legs. Pull the rope tight (dally the slack), and you’ve got it!

How to Score

We timed each run, from the moment the dummy moves forward, with a stopwatch. We stop the timer when the dummy is both headed & heeled.

It has to be a legal head catch: both horns, half a head (1 horn), or around the neck. We added a 5 second penalty if only caught one heel.

Come Give it a Try!

The Tradition of Ogden Pioneer Days

- posted by Regan Taylor

Utah’s founding is a story of 148 pioneers trekking over 1,000 miles across the country and finally arriving to the Salt Lake Valley on July 24th, 1847. By 1869, some 70,000 or so more pioneers made this long, strenuous trip to our beautiful state of Utah.

In the summer of 1934, Mayor Harmon W. Peery started what’s known as “Ogden Pioneer Days”. This was how he wanted to celebrate and remember Utah’s pioneer ancestors and heritage.

The Ogden Pioneer Days has definitely been a tradition that has stuck; every year, the Ogden Pioneer Stadium puts on a rodeo and other special events, such as a parade and western festival, that attracts many people. Today, it’s known to be among the top 5 best large outdoor rodeos by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association (PRCA).

Jim Smith And The Ogden Pioneer Days

Jim Smith, son of Smith and Edwards Bert Smith, was President of Smith and Edwards since the 60’s, and an ardent supporter of the rodeo lifestyle. To understand Jim and Paula Smith’s total involvement with the Ogden Pioneer Days tradition, I talked with Jim’s close friend and Executive Administrator of Ogden Pioneer Days, Jackie Belnap.

Jim Smith

Jim Smith

Jackie recalled Jim becoming a part of the Ogden Pioneer Day’s Heritage Foundation Board some 10 or so years ago. But she says his active involvement really had been going on for somewhere between 35-45 years before. He was there to sponsor or support in ANY way he could.

Jackie said it was almost like every time the board thought to ask the Smith family for help, that they had already had it in their minds to help anyway. In other words, he didn’t have to be asked; Jim jumped in with both feet because of the passion he had for the Ogden Pioneer Days and community. And Paula was always right there with him, supporting in anyway she could too.

One moment that stood out to Jackie was when Ogden Pioneer Days had their volunteer appreciation party. Jackie had asked if Jim would be willing to give out a couple free gifts to some of these volunteers for their involvement and help with the Ogden Pioneer Days activities. Expecting just a couple free gifts, like they had agreed to, Jackie was stunned when she came to Smith and Edwards to pick them up. Jim had filled up an entire pick-up truck full of gifts for these volunteers who had taken time out of their day to help out. All 300 volunteers received a gift that night.

Of course, he did more than just support financially. Jim did all he could because he truly cared about all these people and what the Ogden Pioneer Days stands for. Jackie told me: “We would sometimes refer to him as our water boy. He was always making sure the cowboys had their cold water ready and that the coolers were always filled. There was literally no end to his support.”
Paula and Tenlee Smith

“Dad and Mom enjoy rodeo and the lifestyle. Dad competed in rodeo when he was younger and they raised all of us kids to love it too. Dad enjoyed his involvement with Ogden Pioneer Days. One of his main concerns was making sure the needs of the contestants were met. Mom has also helped out by volunteering in the contestant hospitality tent. She has always been everyone’s mom. This time of year the rodeo athletes spend a lot of time on the road. Its nice for them to feel like they have a place where they can refuel and recharge.

Dad always believed fully in giving back to the community and service. The Ogden Pioneer Heritage Foundation is one of the many boards he served on. He always felt like the store (Smith and Edwards) was blessed and that we are lucky to have the success that we do. It was his way of giving back. They are a great example of service before self.” -Misti Kosoff, daughter of Jim and Paula Smith

Jim Smith passed away in March, 2013. But his presence and support for our community is still deeply rooted. After he passed, the Jim Smith Memorial Scholarship was created. This is a $1,000 scholarship for high school seniors involved with rodeo, 4-H or FFA. All around Ogden at special rodeo events or fairs, you’re more than likely going to see a Smith and Edwards sponsor sign.

There was no limit to how much support Jim and Paula had for our community. This year, Jim and Paula Smith are being honored as Grand Marshalls for the Ogden Pioneer Days 2015 celebration. To learn more click here.

Better than Last Year!

The Perry Range added a dueling tree this year, so the dueling tree was a fun challenge: 10 people won & received free ammo passes! Right on. This event definitely topped last year’s Range Day.

We’ve really got to thank our AWESOME sponsors! Many more vendors showed their products this year, which not only meant that you got to try out more guns: you got more attention. Vendors got to explain specs, gun operation, and give you feedback.

And, we the Smith & Edwards team were able to spend more time making sure the gun fit you, you had a good grip and stance, and that you felt confident operating the gun.

How to get to the Perry Gun Range

How to get to the Three Mile Creek Range in Perry, Utah

- posted by Rose Marion

We LOVE the Perry Three Mile Creek Shooting Sports Range!

It’s awesome being able to visit such a high-quality outdoor gun range, practically in our back yard.

The Three Mile Creek range features targets for handguns (bring your own for a fun time!), 50 yard targets, and long-range targets out to 1000 yards.

We get people asking us all the time, how do you get to the Perry gun range?

Well we could tell ya…. but why don’t we just show you?

How to get to the Three Mile Creek Gun Range:

The Three Mile Creek Gun Range is on the west side of I-15, just north of the Port of Entry. Take I-15 to exit 357 (Willard), turn east toward the mountains, and then turn left onto Highway 89.

  • From Highway 89, turn west onto 3000 S (marked with Perry City offices sign).
  • Travel down to the stop sign at 1200 W by the Perry City offices, and take a right.
  • Take the first left onto 2950 S (by the church). Take this road over the train tracks and under the overpass.
  • Turn left after the overpass, onto I-15 Frontage Road.
  • Take a right at the Three Mile Creek Range sign…. and you’re here!

“The gun range is a little out of the box, but we hope it’ll reach a lot of family and individuals, and help the sport of shooting.” – Perry mayor Karen Cronin

We really owe Perry City and the Rangemasters a huge THANK YOU for allowing us to host our annual Range Day event at the Perry Range. Thank you!Smith & Edwards Range Day is June 12, 2015!

Mike showing us the essentials of handgun grip and stance

Handgun Grip & Stance for Marksmanship

- posted by Mike Vause

Long before James Bond drew a gun, pointed it, and shot the bad guy squarely in the chest…

He had to develop his form.

Grip and stance are the most important things to know about with any type of gun. Your grip keeps you safe and on-target. Your stance keeps you firmly planted and able to repeat a shot – and even move if necessary.

Maybe you love target practice, or maybe you are interested in getting into shooting competitions. Maybe you’re interested in improving your accuracy for personal defense situations. Or – maybe you haven’t actually gone to the gun range yet!

I made this video for you so that no matter your skill or experience level, you’ll feel confident and EXCITED to head to the range!

Watch the Essentials of Handgun Grip & Stance

In the video, I gave you some good pointers:

  • Hold the gun in your dominant hand with the whole hand high in the grip but under the slide
  • Keep your thumbs next to each other on the other side of the gun
  • Hold your nondominant hand as a support, keeping the gun steady so you can repeat your shot
  • Try to keep both eyes open so you can see your target, and what you shot, better
  • Keep an athletic stance, with your knees bent
  • Lean in toward the gun, not backing away from it

With these tips you can head to the range, even as a beginner, and have a great time!

What do you want to know about marksmanship?

Want more marksmanship tips? Leave a comment with what you want to see, and I can make a more advanced video to address more in-depth marksmanship tips, now that we’ve covered the basics.

Enter to win a FREE Gun!

Yep – you could win one of 2 FREE handguns that we’re giving away leading up to Range Day. Enter with your email address or Facebook account to enter to win!

In addition to what I showed you about form, every shooter, new or experienced, should know the 4 rules of gun safety.

The Four Rules of Gun Safety

  1. Treat every gun as if it’s loaded. Guns require a heavy level of respect. Don’t make the news: always assume the gun is loaded.
Before you clean your gun or hand it to someone to use, check there’s no ammunition. Eject the magazine, check the chamber visually and with your finger. Even when cleaning or handling a gun you know is empty, follow the following three rules.
  2. Never point a gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy. A gun always has to point at something. Make sure it’s a wall, a table, or the ground. At the Range, it’s good practice to always keep the gun pointing down range, at the targets.
  3. Always know what your target is – and what’s BEYOND it. This is important for home defense more than at the range: if you fire your gun, what will the bullet hit behind your target?
  4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are aimed at the target & ready to fire.
In the movies you see good guys and bad guys running around with their finger on the trigger. In real life, that’s an easy way to get hurt in a hurry. It’s easy to get startled or twitch, and the first thing that’s going to happen is pulling the trigger. It’s just instinct. So as Blaine showed in the video, keep your finger on the frame of the gun until you’re in place and ready to shoot.

I’ll see you at Range Day! Every lane at Range Day will have a gun for you to shoot as well as a Smith & Edwards or manufacturer representative to help you load the gun and shoot it safely. We’re here to help you have a good time!

Springfield Dueling Tree Competition – GoPro Video

- posted by Rose Marion

Mike Vause challenged me to a duel the other day….

He’d already bought the ammo, so I said OK!

We went to the Perry Three Mile Creek Range and squared off at the dueling tree.

(You’ll get to try your marksmanship skills at the Dueling Tree on Range Day!)

Watch the Competition from a First-Person Perspective

I didn’t know Mike would show up wearing a GoPro… you’ve got to take a look at it from his perspective!

About the Dueling Tree

The dueling tree’s designed for two shooters to swing the targets to the other side. If you’ve hit all of yours, your opponent can swing them back to you!

(We would have started out with equal gongs on a side… but we didn’t bring our waders)

Best of all, the Dueling Tree’s made out of good steel so it’s not just restricted to rimfire. Wahooo!

What we Shot

Both of us shot Springfield guns. I gotta tell you, I love these guns – I’m 5’2 with not a lot of grip strength, and I can rack the slide very easily. I also like the grip safety, it makes sure I’ve got a good proper grip on the gun and makes me feel more secure on it.

I shot the Springfield XDM 9mm in 5.25. Mike shot the Springfield XDM 45 in 4.5 with TFX TrueGlo Night Sights.

Your Turn!

Come try your hand at the dueling tree on Range Day, June 12th 2015, at the Perry Range. See you then!

Smith & Edwards hosted our 1st Dummy Ropin’ on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

We’re glad everyone who came had such a great time!

There were 3 rounds and a range of ages participating…. and some GREAT prizes, from Smith & Edwards gift cards to ball caps and patches from Smart Roping, Fast Back Ropes, Bailey, Bex, and more.

It was a ton of fun for the adults who came. And it was even more fun to see the kids having a blast, whether they brought their own rope & gloves or they were trying their hand at ropin’ for the first time.

What do you think? Should we make a Dummy Ropin’ a Smith & Edwards tradition like the Gun Auction?

Smith and Edwards Range Day 2014 at the Three Mile Creek Range in Perry, UtahWow… if you came to the Perry City Range on Friday, June 13th, you had an amazing start to Father’s Day weekend!

The Three Mile Creek Gun Range hosted about 250 people on Range Day, from people who came with their families to shoot, to Smith & Edwards staff, and even Karen Cronin, Perry City mayor.

Mayor Karen Cronin at Range Day 2014 in Perry, Utah

Perry Mayor Karen Cronin with Head Rangemaster Eric Halter (L) and Sporting Goods manager Mike Vause (R) from Smith & Edwards at the Three Mile Creek Range in Perry, Utah

Perry’s Three Mile Creek Range was Amazing!

Karen Cronin, Mayor of Perry City, said that Range Day was “extremely successful!” “We owe a big thank you to Smith & Edwards and to all the employees that made it happen.”

Range Day was “the first big event that we’ve partnered with private industry on so it was pretty exciting from the get go,” Karen said. “What was really neat was the opportunities it gave the public to try out different guns, try out the gun range, and I hope it was helpful for Smith and Edwards to get the public exposed to the guns they carry.”

“Now that Smith and Edwards has taken the first step, maybe different businesses will try it out and give shooters the experience of trying out their equipment at our Range.”

Mayor Karen was happy to see the different families that came to see the Range and try out the guns and equipment at the range. “It was way cool,” she said, to see kids with their parents in a “safe, controlled environment with the rangemasters there.”

Head Rangemaster Eric Halter said the Range Day was a “smashing success.” He said the goals of the Perry City Range are to introduce youth to shooting sports, and to host competitions and matches – and Range Day demonstrated that the Three Mile Creek Range is the perfect spot for that. Also a Smith & Edwards employee, Eric said he was thrilled to see shooters of all ages at the event, from families and novices to experienced shooters. Youth shooting at Range Day

Mike Vause, Sporting Goods buyer at Smith & Edwards, organized Range Day with the help of Perry City and Three Mile Creek Gun Range representatives, as well as manufacturers. “People had no idea that the event was going to have such support from manufacturers.” Representatives from Springfield Armory, Browning, Crimson Trace, Desert Tech, NEMO, Spirit Ammunition, and Taylor Targets were there to support the event all day that Friday at the range.

About half the people Mike talked to had never realized that there was such a great gun range this close – a great gun range in Utah, right here in our back yard.

All 20 lanes at the Three Mile Creek Range had a gun to try out, and each lane had a Rangemaster, manufacturer’s representative, or a Smith & Edwards employee to load the ammunition, help spot the targets, and if needed, guide the shooter on the gun they were trying.

We were happy to help guide novice shooters and families who were teaching their kids how to shoot!

The Range has 2 big sets of bleachers for families to watch the shoot. The parking lot is nice and had enough spots for us at Range Day. Plus, there’s a speaker system so it was clear when shooting stopped for us to repaint targets.

The Perry shooting range is a great place to teach your kids to shoot, and target practice. It’s a perfect spot for shooters of all ages.

Smith & Edwards’ Range Day was the first major event held at the Perry shooting range. We’re excited to see what more comes to Perry’s Three Mile Creek Gun Range in the future!

What shooters thought of Range Day

We asked Connor Squires what he liked about Range Day:

The shooting. I love to shoot.

We asked Connor what handguns were his favorite. He said “All of the 9’s.” Rifles? “The 22s and the 223s. I loved them all.”Kenny Jensen said Great day, can't wait for the next one on Facebook about Range Day at the Perry shooting range!
Brett Farrin said:

Where else can you take your 15 year old son and introduce him to some of the best guns on the market in a safe and healthy environment. We had a blast. Thank you Smith and Edwards for putting this together. We will definitely be supporting the 2nd annual Range Day!

I am not sure how it would work but a shotgun trap shoot would have been fun. There are a couple of shot guns I would have liked to pulled the trigger on.

I really like the Springfield XD 40. It is on my wish list. It was so fun to be able to put some bullets through these guns.

The HMR .17 was a lot of fun. It is not something I would have purchased but having shot it, it was one of our favorites. We also shot the 5.62 from Springfield. Now that I could own.

About the Three Mile Creek Range

Construction of the Three Mile Creek Range began in 2012 and it now features 20 lanes and targets at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards… and more expansion is planned, including an archery range, law enforcement training center, and 1000 yard targets.

If you’re looking for a Utah shooting range to call home, we highly recommend the Three Mile Creek Range!

The Perry Three Mile Creek Range offers day passes and year passes. The Range is open to all shooters Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00-5:00pm except the first Saturday of the month, closed for maintenance.

The Perry gun range is located just north of the weigh station/point of entry west of I-15. Simply take 2950 S and head west under the I-15 overpass, then follow the road south. Take the first right and you’re there – here’s a link to the range on Google Maps.

Mayor Karen Cronin tells us that through the summer, Perry is working to get the training facility at the Three Mile Creek Range operational. The Range is going to take the inside of the training facility and refurbish it to make it more conducive to do training like hunter’s safety for 30-50 people at a time. This includes an indoor classroom where groups could even do Powerpoint presentations for the class to bring the education portion of the sport to the Range, as well as a kitchenette for groups to host parties at the Range.

There may even be clay pigeon shooting at the Perry range in the future!

Here’s what Mayor Karen Cronin said about the Perry Three Mile Creek Range:

Some people put in swimming pools, some people put in skate parks, we have to make a decision if there’s something we want to sponsor. The gun range is a little out of the box, but we hope it’ll reach a lot of family and individuals, and help the sport of shooting.

What do you think… Should we do it again?
