Women's Jeans Guide from Smith & Edwards

All About Jeans: Women’s Jeans Guide

- posted by EmmaLee Sessions

If you’ve ever been shopping for women’s jeans then you understand exactly how frustrating it can be. Either they fit your waist and hips and you feel like you’re going to split the leg seams with every step, or they fit your thighs and hips and gap at the back of the waistband.

There is just no winning, or so it would appear. What you need to do is identify what you like and steer clear of things that don’t match up with that.

As discussed in our Men’s Jeans Guide, the way your jeans fit is about more than just comfort. It’s also about looking good, by finding what is most flattering for your body shape, and feeling better. Hopefully, the three aspects we discuss today, rise, leg opening, and fit, will help you in your quest for the mythical “perfect pair of jeans.”

Women’s Jeans: RISE

A jean’s rise is determined by how far the waistband of the jeans comes up the waist. The greater the distance is between the crotch and the waistband the higher the rise.

Women's jeans rises from highest to lowest.

Jeans rise graphic via Joy of Clothes

Each brand varies from one another, but there are typically three main rises. You can approximate the rise of a jean by measuring from the crotch seam to the top of the front waistband.

Natural-Rise Ladies’ Jeans

Natural rise jeans, also called high-rise or performance rise, sit right at the waist. This rise is more than 10 1/2″ and help your legs look longer. These women’s jeans are perfect for those competing in rodeos, or for hard-working ladies that do a lot of bending in a day. Take a look at the variety of ladies’ natural rise jeans, like Wrangler 18MWZ or Cinch Jenna, we have here at Smith & Edwards.

Mid-Rise Ladies’ Jeans

Mid-rise jeans sit just below the waist or about an inch below the navel. This popular rise is neither too tall nor too short, measuring between 9″ and 11″. Most body types look flattering in this rise!

From Wrangler’s Cash and Q-Baby to Cinch Ada, Silver Aiko to Rock Revival, you’ll find something you love.

Low-Rise Ladies’ Jeans

Low-rise jeans sit a few inches below the navel. The rise is between 7 – 9-1/2″ and are most flattering on slender figures.

Keep in mind that “muffin tops” and “love handles” are often accentuated by this fit style. Check out our Wrangler Sadie and Cinch Bailey styles, and our selection of Rock Revival jeans.

You’ll find Women’s Jeans on our website, and even more styles in our Ogden, Utah store.

Ladies’ Jeans: LEG OPENING

In women’s jeans, there are so many different leg openings and it can get real confusing.

You may ask quite frequently, “When is the best time to wear ______________ jeans?” This leg opening section of my women’s jeans guide should help you out a lot!

Women’s Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are tight around your calf and are perfect to wear with fashion and western boots, most flats, and heels. They taper from the knee down and have an ultra low profile. This makes them perfect for showing off those red high heels or your favorite western kicks.

Take a look at our Cruel Girl Abby jeans. Cruel Girl and Cinch are sister companies and you can find multiple styles sold right here in our Ogden location.

Women’s Straight-Leg Jeans

Straight leg jeans have the next lowest profile and are extremely versatile. The bottom half of the pant leg goes straight down from the knee, so they are a little looser around your calf than skinny jeans. You’ll love these Silver Suki styles and the original Wrangler 14MWZ cowboy cut jeans in white and blue.

Ladies’ straight leg jeans tuck into boots fairly well and can be worn with most footwear. If you like the cuffed look, these jeans are perfect for getting an even cuff with no puckering.

Women’s Bootcut Jeans

Bootcut jeans are narrower in the knee than at the leg opening, so you can put the pant-leg over your boots. A lot of your western, riding, or work jeans are boot cut. You can also wear this style with your favorite pair of tennis shoes. They don’t cuff as well as your skinny or straight-leg jeans.

Wrangler’s Mae, Cash, and Classic Fit jeans are as hardworking and fashion forward as you are. Also check out the different Ariat styles we carry.

Women’s Wide Leg & Flare Leg Jeans

Wide leg and flare leg jeans have a very distinct flare. The hem of the pant-leg is wider than the knee. “Trouser cut” is one specific style of wide leg pants. We know you’ll love this Cruel Girl Jayley style with a trouser cut.

Cruel Denim Jayley Wide Leg women's jeans

Women’s Jeans: FIT

A jean’s fit is determined by how tightly it fits through your waist, hips, and thighs. Fit styles include slim, regular, relaxed, and loose fit.

Depending on the manufacturer of the jeans you’re looking at, you may see different terms or style names on the jean fit spectrum. This section will give you a base knowledge, but you’ll always want to check with the manufacturer to determine the most likely fit of the jeans you want to buy.

Ladies’ Slim Fit Jeans

Slim fit jeans hug your curves tightly and are narrow from the waist through the hips and thighs. Brands such as Rock Revival, Miss Me, and Grace in L.A. tend to have a slimmer fit. Take a look at these and other great brands in slim fit.

Ladies’ Regular Fit Jeans

Regular fit jeans hug your curves but offer a better range of movement than slim fit. They are a little looser between the waist, hips, and thighs. This common fit is flattering and comfortable.

We carry this fit in brands such as Silver, Ariat, and Wrangler styles 09MWZ, WRC10, and WRQ20.

Ladies’ Relaxed Fit Jeans

Relaxed fit jeans fit loosely through the waist, hip, and thigh. They are more comfortable than other fits because of the extra room and freedom of movement.

Cinch’s Ada and Bailey styles are the perfect jeans for that girl who needs to move! We also have a variety of Wranglers and other brands with this same great fit.

Ladies’ Loose Fit Jeans

Loose fit jeans have even more room through the hip and thigh. This fit is baggy through the waist, hip and thigh. They allow for better movement and added comfort. Many of your boyfriend-style jeans would be considered loose-fit jeans.

Tips for Caring for your New Jeans

Now that we have gone over all of the basics about a jean’s fit then you can be set free, right? Unfortunately, it’s not quite that easy. There are just a few final things to keep in mind when buying and caring for jeans.

First, just find what you are comfortable in. The next time you go shopping, take your favorite pair of jeans with you. This will help you find jeans similar in size, style, fit, and color to aid you in your shopping experience.

Next, learn how to care for your jeans. To ensure that jeans will fit the same way every time you wear them you need to wash them in cold water and avoid the dryer. Hot water and heated drying will cause your jeans to shrink and your jeans will be unable to recover.

One last thing to keep in mind is getting your jeans starched at the dry cleaner’s every once in a while. This will keep your jeans feeling and looking like new. It also helps to prolong the life of your jeans.

Brand Spotlight: Yellowstone Leather Products for 40 Years Runnin’

- posted by EmmaLee Sessions

We here at Smith and Edwards have often wondered, “What makes a good, leather work glove?” The folks at Yellowstone Leather Products have been showing us what a good quality work glove looks like for the past 47 years, and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

Kevin modeling our Yellowstone elkskin and deerskin gloves.

Yellowstone Leather Products is an Idaho-based business that opened in 1960. In 1969, now owner, Boyd Zollinger bought the company and went to work marketing and distributing American made work gloves. Zollinger said, “I was back east for school and was looking for a way to get back to Idaho,” where he was originally from. “My family and I looked at this company that was for sale and we thought, ‘we could work with that.'” That’s exactly what they have been doing now for the last 47 years.

Smith & Edwards has had a long partnership with Boyd and Yellowstone, reaching back to 1969:

“We found their quality is far superior to any other glove we carry,” said Jim Smith, president of Smith & Edwards, an Ogden, Utah, retailer that has stocked Yellowstone Gloves for more than 35 years. “Most people who buy Yellowstone know they are quality gloves that will last longer than two or three other pairs they could buy cheaper.”
Article from 2010 by Clark Corbin with the Idaho Falls Post Register

What makes Yellowstone Leather work gloves different?

The patented pattern of Yellowstone work gloves is really, what sets them apart from other work gloves. All of the premium leather gloves made at their warehouse in Idaho Falls feature both a seamless palm and back, making these work gloves form fitting. They fit tighter to your hand, Zollinger said, thus making it more like working with your bare hands, but with the protection necessary for even the toughest jobs.

Jean modeling our Yellowstone elkskin and deerskin gloves.

Jean, one of our managers, modeling our Yellowstone elkskin and deerskin gloves. Jean manages the gloves department as well as our famous candy section!

Talking about premium leather, these gloves are made from some of the finest, hand selected elk, deer, and goatskin in the western United States. When asked about the difference in materials, Smith and Edwards’ own Jean Dimick said, “Elkskin and deerskin last longer than traditional cowhide gloves. They won’t get hard and brittle if they get wet.” You can enjoy soft, supple gloves no matter what.

What projects can I use my Yellowstone Leather work gloves for?

These deer and elkskin gloves can be used for any job, big or small, tough or easy. Elkskin is a heavier leather than deerskin and are best for heavy-duty jobs, such as fencing and other ranch work and construction. Deerskin gloves are more pliable and comfortable, and better for easy jobs.

We would rave about these gloves all day if we could. So come on in and find out for yourself what makes these work gloves so special. We know you’ll fall in love with the Idaho-based, made in USA, leather work gloves that we have come to love and depend on too. Dyeing Rodeo Queen Gear with Rodeo Ink

Right on HUE: Dyeing Rodeo Outfits for Queens with Rodeo Ink

- posted by Jerica Parker

I have always looked at Rodeo Queen contestants and wondered how they got all their outfits to match so perfectly. It’s incredible! From their hats, to their boots, and even their horse tack, it is all the same shade.

A frequent question we get asked is, How do I dye my own rodeo queen outfits? So, we asked around to give you the answers.

If you’ve ever tried to dye your own rodeo outfits, you’ve experienced just how hard it really is. Sometimes they can turn out, and other times the whole batch is botched.

So we talked to Ron Hansen, owner of the Rodeo Ink Company. We got the chance to sit down with him and talk to him a little bit about his business Rodeo Ink and dyeing rodeo outfits.

Dyeing Rodeo Outfits Q&A

S&E: How did you get started?

Ron: Ever since my little girl started doing rodeo queen contests, I’ve started dyeing her outfits. Pretty soon, word got out, and I began sending out dye orders for rodeo queens all over the states. It’s been 5 years now since I’ve started, and since Rodeo Ink opened for business.

S&E: What are some common mistakes people will make when dyeing on their own?

Ron: Well, dyeing is kind of a tricky thing. Many times, people don’t take into account all the different materials and dyes you have to use to get the same shade on everything. People can very easily can ruin a pair of jeans when dyeing. I hear a lot of “Help me fix this!” and a lot of times, stripping the dye out again is nearly impossible.

So I help people start over. Some good jeans to start with when dyeing are white Wranglers, style 13 or 14, and blank white boots. That way the dye goes on in its pure color, and you’re not overlapping and getting strange colors in the end.

S&E: What does a rodeo queen need dyed?

Ron: Just about everything! That includes shirt, jeans, boots, etc. Even reins, saddle pads, and custom tack. I can dye all those all the same color to match the outfit. Also, I have a contact with someone who does custom jewelry, airbrushing, and more.

S&E: What other events do you do dyeing for?

Ron: I do stuff for high school rodeo queen contestants, horse shows, Western pleasure, Texas stock shows, and even youth competitions – not just high schoolers. Also, I have worked with State Queens and Miss Rodeo America contestants.

S&E: What’s rodeo queening’s effect on families?

Ron: Rodeo Queening is a great program for families. I have been involved in rodeo for more than 30 years and I was a rodeo clown & bull fighter for about 13 years. My whole family has been involved in rodeo for 10 years now and we have learned a lot, and not only about rodeo.

Being involved in rodeo queen pageants teaches kids about responsibility and self-worth, which is something that can help these kids out a lot when growing up.

Now We Know!

Thank you Ron! He gave us some awesome tips and ideas and we hope that those were able to help you as well. He’s got a knack for dyeing and says that he can match any color you send him. He recently added a new gal to help him out during the peak season, where they send out about 10-12 pairs in a week to orders from all across the United States and Canada.

If you would like to get into contact with Ron, or would like to look at some of his work, here you can check out his Rodeo Ink Instagram or his Rodeo Ink Facebook page.

The Littlest Cowboy in Texas and his Wild Rag

- posted by Jerica Parker

Whether you’re working out on the ranch, or goin’ out on the town, a young cowboy or a timeless one, some things just never change. Just how Wranglers have been around for what seems like forever and they have never lost their style.

As for the Egger family, passing on these timeless traditions to their kids, as well as adding some of their own, is a must.

Colton and his guitar

We recently had this cute little family buy some of the 100% silk Wild Rags we sell here in our store. Afterwards, they sent us some beautiful photos they had taken of their young son, Colton, by Sallie Scott with Country Grace Photography.

Colton Egger posing with his wild rag!

Colton’s set up camp and he’s ready to play!

The photos turned out so cute! This little cowboy is a natural. And he’s got on a Wild Rag! If that doesn’t convince you they’re good looking, I don’t know what will.

The Eggers aren’t the only family loving these scarves. Marty Thompson, our Western Tack manager here at Smith and Edwards, and his family also love them. His cute kids know a couple different ways tie a Wild Rag to be the slickest lookin’ cowboy around. Click here to see Marty’s son Wells show you How to Tie Wild Rags.

Besides being good looking, Wild Rags are really very practical. They can keep you warm in the cold, and wick away the moisture in the heat. Use them to filter out dust in their air and breathe through it, or to filter out dirty water to drink. And those are just some of their many uses!

They come in many different designs and colors, you can choose whichever fits you best. Here at Smith and Edwards, we happen to have a wide selection of Wild Rags to choose from. Click here to see Wild Rags.

So enjoy your own! Just like the Egger family, you can send us photos of how you use your Wild Rags! Just send us an email at info@smithandedwards.com. And just like Colton, you can be toughest and most handsome cowboy out there.

Smith And Edwards Visits Tony Lama

- posted by Regan Taylor

This July, our President of Smith and Edwards, Craig Smith, and our boot department manager, Evan Gibson, were invited on a trip to El Paso, Texas to visit the Tony Lama factory.

The above video is of a man nailing and pegging the shank of a boot. Notice where he’s pulling the nails out of; HIS MOUTH! Who would of thought someone could make handling a mouth-full of nails look so easy.

Look at all those boots!

Look at all those boots!

Craig and Evan learned quite a bit about the process it takes to make these boots while visiting the factory. Did you know that it takes about 136 steps and 100 people just to finish one pair of Tony Lama’s? That’s way more than I could have ever imagined!

That's one LONG snake!

That’s one LONG snake!

Tony Lama has a section for their “exotic leather’s” they use which have snake, lizard, alligator and even ostrich skins. You can see the snake skins hanging here along their fixtures.

Each person at the factory has their own job and task that must be done quickly AND efficiently in order for the boots to be finished on time and uphold quality standards. Evan and Craig both noticed how the Tony Lama workers all act in sync as a team to get the job done right. It was clear that all these workers took pride in their work AND enjoyed what they were doing.

What’s a Boot Jack?

A boot jack is a tool we like to use to keep the backs of our boots looking brand new. Place your heel in the horseshoe shape, place the opposite foot on the angled surface of the boot jack, and pull up on the first boot. Voila! Your boot has now been removed without any accidental scuffing along the heel. Pick up yours today!

Pioneer Trek Outfit Ideas and Packing List

What You Need for Pioneer Trek

- posted by Rebecca Adams

The Pioneer Trek has become a popular activity for LDS church members. It’s an opportunity to experience a little bit of the life lived by the Utah pioneers. It is a way for them to learn and experience a little part of the challenges and sacrifices they faced as they made their way across the plains of America in search for religious freedom.

The Trek Experience

The trek is an opportunity to travel back in time and let go of everyday comforts and modern technology. Cell phones, cars, and cable are left at home and are replaced with handcarts, face-to-face conversation, and the great outdoors.

When you start your trek you are placed into a family that consists of a ma, pa, and siblings. The group is about ten people to a handcart as they travel up to 13 miles a day. Looking for a packing list to replace your misplaced list? Check out our Trek Packing List!

LDS Trek Outfit Ideas

A pioneer trek typically lasts for four days and travels through about 28 miles of rough terrain. As a participant of the trek you must be at least 14 years old and up to 18.

Being physically prepared is also very important: get out and walk for at least 60 minutes a day at least two weeks before the trek. Many activities are planned out as part of the pioneer experience: square dancing, spiritual meeting, and personal stories and history of the pioneers.

What do you Wear for Trek?

To fully appreciate and experience the pioneer trek, the clothing you wear will reflect those of a pioneer. LDS trek clothing can be a bit of a challenge, but our crew has been helping folks find the perfect outfit for several years – we’ll help you find the right pieces.

The Story Behind Cowboys Unlimited

The Story Behind Cowboys Unlimited

- posted by Regan Taylor

It all started with two risk-taking brothers and one shot-in-the-dark idea; to create a self-owned T-shirt company! The Moss Brothers ( Matt and Calvin Cahoon) have owned their own business since 1996 and are based out of Payson, UT.

And although the company has come a long way from where it started, they still keep it going strong the same way they built it; with each other! Matt and Calvin do everything themselves, from design and artwork to the shipping of the shirts!

The Making of a Commendable Company

Matt and Calvin Cahoon grew up in California, moving to Utah sometime after high school. Matt attended BYU and recieved an MBA and degree in engineering. Calvin, on the other hand, studied at University of Utah, played lacrosse, and got a degree in exercise science. He was working at a local country store and decided that their products weren’t all that special; so he decided “why not?”

While interviewing Calvin, he told me about how he’s always been attracted to the country way of life, saying ” a deal is as good as a handshake when it comes to people from the country. People always seem to be in a hurry to get no where, but not country people. They become family”.

It wasn’t hard to decide who they wanted their target market to be, so they came up with 4 clothing lines specified to the tastes of country folk:

1. Cowboys Unlimited: Traditional Cowboy T-Shirts – a VERY popular line!

2. Cowgirls Unlimited: Traditional T-Shirts for those one-of-a-kind cowgirls.

3. No-Bull: Matt and Calvin’s more “risque” line that has funny quotes and sayings! ( Calvin told me they come up with these quotes from experiences and memories of funny moments where someone did or said something noteworthy ).

"Due to the rising cost of ammunition, I am no longer able to provide warning shots. Sorry for the inconvenience" - Tyler repping the No-Bull line.

4. Horses Unlimited: Made specifically for all the horse lovers.

Live What You Love - Cowgirls Unlimited Tee

When they opened in fall of 1996, I don’t know if the Moss brothers really knew how well it was going to do. They had sold their shirts to 11 stores just before Christmas, and by the time the Christmas season was over all 11 stores had sold EVERY ONE of their shirts!

They then traveled to Kansas and teamed up with a company that put their shirts into 27 stores across the nation. After that, Matt and Calvin attended a spring trade show in Dallas, and gained another 15 stores to put their unique shirts into! They were then granted another whopping 48 stores.

How Far Have They Come Today?

Today, the Moss brothers have around 2500 locations carrying their clothing line. The company now has about 125 designs, and not only sell T-shirt’s but now also sell hoodies, kids clothing, window decals, housewares and BBQ sets. (Wow!)

The team make an awesome duo – Matt does most of the artwork and does quite well on the business end of things, while Calvin can be referred to as the carefree salesman. They work together to create the best possible team for their company. Products are always stocked in full to avoid any type of lag, even though it’s just the two of them doing all the work.

They continue to shine every year and who better to depend on than your own brother, right?

Why We Think It’s So Awesome

Smith and Edwards is also a company that came about from an idea two men had back in 1947, so of course we have support for two brothers doing the same thing. It’s always inspiring to see two people taking an idea and making it into a successful business.

I asked Calvin at the end of our interview “If you had one minute to tell a kid the secret of owning his own business, what would you tell him?” He paused and then told me, “You could have the Cadillac of all Cadillacs of products, but if you can’t sell it, you’re still broke.” In other words, make a product you know will be of interest to your customers, and PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE!

Take risks, make your mark, and share your product with the world because you never know where it may lead! You can support Utah’s own Moss Brothers by buying their T-shirts online or coming into Smith and Edwards today.

Get your hard-working husband a good new vest or pair of pants for Easter: he’ll be blown away by how well you “get” what he likes.

All that and it looks good, too.

The Wrangler Painted Desert Basic Work shirt is a classic that is built to last. Made of 100% 5oz solid twill, it is perfect for the spring weather but heavy enough to hold up against everyday wear and tear. We carry it in white, tan, and black – as well as this vivid red dye.
